1. Statement of Intent
The directors of Discover Artists: Professional Performance Training are committed to providing a
safe and healthy environment for all children, young people, staff, freelancers, and visitors. We
recognise our duty of care under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and related legislation.
Our aim is to prevent accidents, injuries, and ill health by promoting safe practices during all
classes, rehearsals, and performances.
2. Responsibilities
• Directors hold overall responsibility for health and
safety.
• At least one First Aid trained director will always be present during sessions.
• Freelancers and guest tutors must follow this policy and report hazards or concerns
immediately.
• All children and young people will be encouraged to take responsibility for their own safety
and that of others.
3. Venue Safety
• Sessions are currently held in the Upper Room, Hillside Church, Wimbledon, with
occasional use of other church spaces.
• Emergency exits and fire escapes are clearly marked and must be kept clear at all times.
• In the event of an evacuation, staff will lead students calmly to the nearest exit and gather at
the designated assembly point outside the church.
• A register will be taken at the assembly point.
Risk Assessment & Activities
• Risk assessments will be carried out for all activities, venues, equipment, and performances.
• Activities include acting, dance, singing, improvisation, and the use of props, lights,
cameras, instruments, tables, and chairs.
• Staff will ensure safe spacing for movement and dance to prevent collisions and injuries.
• Heavy or electrical equipment will only be handled by staff or trained freelancers.
5. First Aid & Accident Reporting
• At least one qualified First Aider will be present at all times (currently both directors are/
will be trained).
• A First Aid kit is available on site and checked regularly.
• An Accident/Incident Log will be maintained for all injuries, incidents, or near misses.
• Parents will be informed of any incidents involving their child.
• Serious accidents will be reported in line with RIDDOR (Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and
Dangerous Occurrences Regulations).
6. Food & Refreshments
• One supervised snack/refreshment break will take place during sessions.
• Parents/carers must inform staff of any allergies or dietary needs in advance.
• No sharing of food between students is permitted to reduce allergy risk.
7. Arrival & Collection
• Children under the age of 15 must be collected by a parent or authorised adult at the church
door.
• Parents must notify staff in advance if someone else will be collecting their child.
• Young people aged 15+ may leave independently with written parental consent.
General Safety Rules
• No running indoors unless as part of supervised activity.
• Appropriate clothing and footwear must be worn for dance and movement.
• Electrical equipment must not be tampered with by students.
• Staff must be informed immediately of any hazards, damage, or concerns.
9. Monitoring & Review
This policy will be reviewed annually or sooner if circumstances change (e.g., new venues, new
activities). Updates will be shared with all staff and freelancers.
